"The music was scary, pushing me to the edge," he recalled. "Garcia's guitar seemed to come out of the universe and try to eat me alive."
Phil remembered the Dead playing Death Don't Have No Mercy. If Garcia's right, it might have been about the only song they played that night - and the song that turned Bear into a Dead follower.

At the Big Beat Acid Test, I believe the "other band" that played with the Dead was just the Pranksters. Per McNally, the Dead were on one side of the room, and at the other end "was the Prankster setup... The Dead and the Pranksters played at the same time." So a newcomer might recall it as two bands on two stages. Given everyone's state of mind and the mass confusion the Pranksters fostered at the tests, it's a wonder anybody remembers what happened there. But that just wasn't so. It was someone I know, who believed in his action, but his truth and my truth are different. I spent the whole evening at Watts in an attempt to imprint that the Kool-Aid on the right was electric and that on the left was for kids. Still there were slip-ups. As one girl unglued she started screaming, "Who cares?" Babbs gave her a mike and as people were rushin' "Who cares?" started screamin' down into their genes. I remember somehow grabbin' an open mike and askin' for help. Maybe some of us care enough to trace the sound to its source and comfort this poor crazy lady. There were about 20 who found her, made a circle around her till her sob moved into a smile. It was very high in that circle. We had passed the acid test. At least I think we did. When you get to the very bottom of the human soul and everything around you seems to be collapsing and just as you start to swim for your life you hear somebody screamin' for help and you pass on your safety and lend another a hand." These dates fell on Friday, Saturday, Sunday in 1968 which looks more likely so I think that is the correct year. The Dead were at the Carousel that weekend so the shows did not happen. Or maybe the poster is just a fake."

While I'm not quite as skeptical (the promoter seems to remember these shows, anyway, and any other year is impossible), it is odd to find this unknown band playing a three-day Tues-Thurs run in Stockton, within two months of their return to San Francisco. For '66, the scheduling is baffling - how did that happen?

As an aside, I was surprised to discover that the Dead had a slight personal connection to Stockton - Phil Lesh had attended the Pacific Music Camp (run by the University of the Pacific in Stockton) in summer 1957, which is where he first heard Miles Davis & Coltrane. I'm convinced that the Acid Test was at the Beaver Hall on SE Hawthorne, as mentioned in comments on the facebook page partially quoted in the post:
https://www.facebook.com/PortlandInThe1960sStoriesFromTheCounterculture/photos/a.337108406383119.78970.324409700986323/569615096465781/
"Do you remember Ken Kesey coming into town?... This was in Southeast – somewhere over there – a hall. And it amounted to like a basketball floor. They had their whole troop up there tootling along and playing Grateful Dead. They passed around a pitcher of classic coke laced with acid."
One Portland researcher who talked to various Pranksters said, "I have been attempting to pin down a date for the...December '65 test for many years, to no avail. From what we have been able to glean, however, the December '65 Test with Kesey in attendance was almost certainly upstairs at the Beaver Hall on Hawthorne. I have heard conflicting accounts of whether, or how many, of the Dead played at that particular Test. All of the people associated most closely with Kesey/Pranksters primarily recall the problems they encountered actually getting to Portland."

(One person in the comment thread says the Acid Test actually took place at the Imperial skating rink about five blocks away; but since that's uncorroborated secondhand info, from a source who doesn't remember the Dead there, I'm doubtful.)

Anyway, the building on SE 9th & Hawthorne also served as a union meeting hall during the '60s (various organizations had met there in previous decades) - around 1959 it was called "the Beaver Building (old Redmen's Hall)." (The Red Men Hall name fell out of use after the '40s.)
In recent years it's held a ballroom and comedy club - the inside has been remodeled - and it currently looks like this -
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Red_Men_Hall-2.jpg (ballroom entrance to the right of the cycle shop)Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-28301739666408998872016-12-29T16:30:53.617-08:002016-12-29T16:30:53.617-08:00And to really confuse the issue, this site http://...And to really confuse the issue, this site http://www.musictrekker.com/rockpop/GratefulDead/grateful_dead.html shows a picture of the building at Hawthorne but provides the Glisan address!IMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00770956092269600588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-74473198838049281452016-12-29T16:15:46.368-08:002016-12-29T16:15:46.368-08:00A couple minor points that support the Portland Ac...A couple minor points that support the Portland Acid Test as being at Beaver Hall at SE Hawthorne, and not the better known Beaver Hall on NW Glisan: This site https://www.proxibid.com/asp/LotDetail.asp?ahid=4283&aid=92623&lid=23769728#topleft shows a poster from 1969 for the grand opening of Beaver Hall on NW Glisan. I've seen a few other Beaver Hall posters on line and all are from 1969. In other words, it looks like this venue wasn't open in 1965/66. This site http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMGJ1M_Red_Men_Hall_Portland_Oregon gives a little description of the building at SE Hawthorne (Red Men Hall) and states, "Space for the Red Men activities would be 2 rooms, arranged so they could be rented for social functions, a larger one of 40x60 feet with 18 foot ceiling, with a stage and lockers, and a maple floor for dancing and 2 exits." So there certainly was space for an acid test there. Finally, this site http://www.lotnut.com/app/item.html?guid=6b849a70-fffa-4fda-9660-d29be7ccf0a6 shows a 1973 poster a concert at Beaver Hall - at SE 9th and Hawthorne. So at least in 1973 there was a Beaver Hall at that address and I suspect that the ballroom in Red Men Hall had been previously known as Beaver Hall, though I can find no confirmation of that anywhere. Bob Fine continued to assist me there, and also at the Tape Music Center, where I did a performance in January of '66 that got good reviews from Philip Elwood of the San Francisco "Examiner" and Alfred Frankenstein of the "Chronicle."

That light show included live and recorded sounds by Bill Spencer. During that period, I was collaborating with a lot of different musicians. I've already mentioned Christopher Tree. Jerry Garcia did a session with me, and James Gurley, who became the lead guitarist of Big Brother, did several, even before he was playing the electric guitar."

The interview also contains Ham's memories of the Herouville trip in '71 and is well worth reading in full.

http://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/lightman-fantastic/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-8271433255297763672016-05-14T00:06:33.799-07:002016-05-14T00:06:33.799-07:00Great discovery. It's interesting that so soon after their return to San Francisco, the virtually-unknown Dead were already playing a little farther afield, in Stockton and Santa Rosa.
Or were they virtually unknown? It seems that college students in the area, at least, wanted to see the Dead, so perhaps a little notoriety had already spread from San Francisco...or perhaps Scully was busy seeking out any possible bookings. [2/25/66] They interviewed the Pranksters and took pictures and said they were going to do a big spread on the acid scene and, they hoped, put the Pranksters on the cover. So they hailed the bus on over to the big photo studio...and Schiller took a lot of pictures."
This took place before the 3/19/66 Acid Test.
