I found 2 shows of The Good Old Boys opening for The Flying Burrito Brothers (not really the Burritos proper as Gram & Chris were long gone, but Sneaky Pete was still around i think) @ My Father's Place in Rosyln, NY on 8-14-76 & 11-27-76 on this archive page and knew immediately that they were players, but had no idea who they were. I really appreciate you clearing all this up! There are many more WLIR-FM recordings of bay area folks and others you mention in this documentation, Rowans, Etc. Perhaps some will find it to be of interest. The band was Frank Wakefield and David Nelson, with Tom Stern, Rick Lindner, Jon Glick and various others.

For a few shows in spring 1975 an 18 year old unknown fiddle player Matt Glaser filled in on tour... Matt would later become Berklee College of Music Department Chair and a renowned musician. Matt was a young local musician who lived near me in Bedford Village (also then home of Loudon Wainwright)

The replacements once included Nancy Josephson as a fill in (Nancy was then with The Buffalo Chips later aka The Buffalo Gals, later David Bromberg's wife... and was part of the strong Syracuse NY bluegrass community... where the Good Ol' Boys played many times since I had attended SU).

One big show in December 1974 after the appearance at the Academy of Music had 500+ people at The Brookside in Syracuse. The poster shows it was promoted by myself and DMR Presents who was later Syracuse renowned promoter and major band manager David M Rezak.

Other dates included an April 1975 show "under Day Hall" on Mt Olympus on SU Campus, rescheduled at the last moment from Jabberwocky... the next night was at The Shaboo Inn in Williamantic CT to a packed house. Great story about Frank taking the motorhome at 6 AM looking for brains and eggs and rolling it in a ditch.

Other spring 1975 tour dates included The Bitter End NYC for two days, four show, The Red Rail in Nanuet (northwest of NYC in Rockland County), in White Plians, a club My Father's Place in Roslyn NY, a club in Northern New Jersey run by John Scher (club name escapes me), The Fore N Aft in White Plains, NY... Green Mountain Bluegrass Festival 1975, The Main Point in Bryn Mawr PA..

Of course at Cafe Lena in Saratoga Springs (Frank's home at the time). College shows included outside in New Paltz at noon on a 40 degree day...

One tour itinerary included a night at The Joyous Lake in Woodstock (Frank ate 3 orders of escargots before Tom Stern asked him "boy Frank you really like those snails"). A show at noon the next day in Brockport SUNY was two hours late in starting (heck, it was before gps and google maps) followed that same night with a show in Syracuse's Jabberwocky.

And many more shows...

More info available from me at onelap97@aol.com Bob KleinmanBob Kleinmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09442404474307058354noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-38910227332213912062018-03-04T18:17:01.698-08:002018-03-04T18:17:01.698-08:00Actually the GAMH show would have been 1975, proba...Actually the GAMH show would have been 1975, probably May or June. Starting in September I had moved to Santa Cruz and would not have been aware or available to attend an SF show. It would also coincide roughly with the 'short tour' and 'pending record release' announced at the gig in New York on June 6 1975.Phil McGeehttps://soundcloud.com/phil-mcgees-tunesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-6519427952330233682018-03-04T17:40:48.205-08:002018-03-04T17:40:48.205-08:00I saw a Good Old Boys "Record release" s...I saw a Good Old Boys "Record release" show at Great American Music Hall in SF, probably Spring 76, possibly 75. Lineup I recall was John Hartford, plus a non-music act, the locally famous Mime Robert Shields (he joined in on the encore, miming rolling a bigger and bigger joint finally the size of the stage), and the Good Old Boys, without Garcia. You say ""We don't have...Great post!

You say ""We don't have any other eyewitness account of the GASB show". But I talk a bit more about 5/5/74 at http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2016/01/great-american-string-band-may-5-1974.html, based also on a show review. I have never heard of GOB opening - you mention a listing, but I have never seen it.

Still not sure whether Nelson sat in with Greenbriar Boys at GSCBF (along with Jerry).

11/29/74 Why is Waylon Jennings in the header? Copy/paste error, maybe should be NRPS?

Great point on the session tapes - I wonder what other tracks are hiding!

Also outstanding work using the Jerry Moore and other tapes. Jerry being half of Relix at the time, he often knew the good nights to hit. Anyway, your work in getting them down talking about planned release dates is very informative. I also love the non-crazy notion of cross-promoting Round Records in the "bluegrass space" of the Deadverse. As you point out, even if the record had been out for the release party in early '76, the fact that it would never see any promotion (I presume) probably consigned it to poor sales, notwithstanding the apparent success of OAITW.
Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-50757918283201208812016-07-12T15:02:02.398-07:002016-07-12T15:02:02.398-07:00Correspondent Keats has sent a link to a Nelson/Wa...Correspondent Keats has sent a link to a Nelson/Wakefield performance at My Fatehr's Place on December 20, 1975. It seems that NRPS was on tour in October of '75, but since they played the Capitol in Passaic on Oct 30-31, Nelson very well could have been free on the night of Oct 28 to play with GOB at The Beacon.

As I recall, at the time the Rowan Brothers were actually known as The Rowans, and featured the trio of Chris, Lorin and Peter Rowan. So Peter Rowan may have played with Good Old Boys as well.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-72584125820467269212016-07-09T10:21:13.998-07:002016-07-09T10:21:13.998-07:00Thanks for the kind words and the close reading. Owsley had been keen on taping the Old & In The Way shows, but Betty was primarily the one taping Garcia-on-the-side, so either of them could've had Good Old Boys shows in their tape archives.

The Good Old Boys, even in the period when Garcia sometimes played with them, definitely didn't have the stable membership of OAITW (it was a "whoever-shows-up" sort of band), but it's also interesting how the two bands worked in reverse - OAITW recorded a studio album first, then decided not to release it, and used live tapes instead; while the Good Old Boys took the opposite path.

The Good Old Boys (and the Rowan Brothers) opened for the Garcia Band at the Beacon Theater, NYC, on 10/28/75. (The show was reviewed in several papers, which might mention the band membership.) Whether they opened at other JGB shows that fall, I don't know.

Also, Garcia mixed the Pistol Packin' Mama album at Ace's in January 1976, per JGMF. Why it was mixed a year after being recorded, who knows? Garcia must have decided to spend a little more studio time to prepare the album once its Round Records release was finally scheduled.
I suspect that one reason the release was delayed so long was not just financial, but because no Dead members were playing on the album, so no one had an incentive to push its release over other Round albums that were more "in the family." As you've mentioned, I suspect there were any number of other potential albums taped at Mickey's studio that might have come out later on Round, had it lasted.

Garcia mentioned his uncredited singing on the album in a later interview: "On one tune, on 'Couldn't Leave Well Enough Alone.' My feeling as producer was that I didn't think it was important to be credited just because I'm singing a harmony part on a tune." (Swing 51, 1983)
I can't remember whether Garcia talked about the Good Old Boys in other interviews, but I think he must have at some point...
