Although not sure if it was 1986 or 87’…thinking more 1986 though.
We also supported The Greg Kihn Band there as well. Initially, the place was called The Country Palace, but apparently Rock was pulling in more revenu at the time! Good times!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-39107540173498582492023-02-27T22:51:06.547-08:002023-02-27T22:51:06.547-08:00I saw Go Ahead three times, the first at the Omni ...I saw Go Ahead three times, the first at the Omni in Oakland 12/19/86. Jerry and Calico showed up and took a table on the side of the dance floor and everyone gave them plenty of space to enjoy the show with the rest of us -- maybe 200 people. gdsets has tape of part of it.

I also saw the 2/5/87 Concord Palace show. Reportedly Brent wanted to play there because it was near where he lived, in Lafayette. The Concord Palace was a 'country & western bar', with red plush wall-to-wall carpets, a small dancefloor, a tiny (useless) stage, with larger than life full length photos on either side of John Wayne and Clark Gable as Rhett Butler. Really. We got there early and hung out at the bar with Harry Popick. Billy's drums were set up on the dance floor with the band around him, so you could dance within six feet of him and watch his hands. While people were still getting there he came out front and said he'd tell stories to pass the time, which he did. Eventually there were 100 or less of us there and they started playing -- two sets, big fun all the way.

I also saw the show 12/2/87 at Placer County Fairgrounds in Roseville. It was in an exhibition hall of the fairgrounds, something like a highschool cafeteria-auditorium. We shoved a bunch of tables out of the way to make more room to dance. Bobby played about eight songs with them, I think to start the show but maybe somewhere along the way. Again, maybe 200 people. A full show both with and without Bobby. All these shows were very big fun, dancing to 2 members of the Dead and a very good band in very intimate circumstances.

The Kreutzmann Margin band goes back to 1983 or so and was earlier billed in 1982 as the Bill Kreutzmann Allstars. It was succeeded by Kokomo which lasted about a year, and then by Go Ahead.

BK is a natural bandleader, as all his bands prove, and he knows how to create a situation in which jamming comes natural. 7 Walkers, the BK-3 and now Billy and the Kids are extensions of this. We also opened for The Greg Khin Band at the same venue around the same time. It actually started out as a Country and Western club, but morphed into a rock club! I believe it could hold 1500 or so, which was a medium large club in those days, along with the Keystone Palo Alto and the Cabaret in San Jose.Hardrawker1https://www.blogger.com/profile/10430611538907741521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-67877260807616856782020-10-29T12:30:58.954-07:002020-10-29T12:30:58.954-07:00Was it after? FM stood for Filthy McNasty's and was (I assume) owned by the same people as the club of the same name on the Sunset Strip, later the Central and now the Viper Room.
In the 70's the FM Station was at least partly owned by Merle Haggard and called Hag's or something like that. Insider info, was connected to the band through friends. Was an unannounced show, word of mouth that turned out to be true. When I was walking in, a friend slapped a backstage pass on me. The backstage was nothing more than a nice bar off to the side where VIPs and the bands hang out before and between sets. I drank with Billy Brent for about an hour. Also, Garcia was in the building but did not play and quickly left the premises when word got out and the crowds came. I am aware of who owns Woody's.
