Also, as a heavy collector of Cipolilina recordings, the “unknown Charlatan” is 100% Richard Olsen. Only Wilhelm and Olsen ever played with the Dinosaurs. Cheers! And as always, great work. I still have a dulcimer he made. I used to play on a harpsichord he built that he kept in his apartment. He was something. And what a family he had! Erudite, quirky and interesting all. He is a person worth studying for anyone interested in the history of folk and rock music in the Bay Area. Many thanks. That being said, I wouldn't rule out more than one appearance at some Oregon bluegrass festival. It would explain the casual integration of Hunter into the Liberty Hill Aristocrats, who went electric as Roadhog. Certainly the demo tape is probably from late 1973.

Maybe the cowboys and dirt farmers had some sort of mutual business on the side? Asking for a friend.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-65278031685466946182017-04-20T10:07:27.375-07:002017-04-20T10:07:27.375-07:00Peter Albin wrote up Rodney's Memorial Concert...Peter Albin wrote up Rodney's Memorial Concert for "Relix" Vol 12 No 1 Feb 1985 and it is available at gdao.

https://www.gdao.org/items/show/825900

It pretty much matches your notes and also has a few interesting titbits about Rodney.

"Bill Graham had hired Rodney in the past to do custom woodwork."

"During the middle 60's Rodney played banjo and fiddle for a group called The New Tradition Singers ... he continued to play at most of the Bay Area folk clubs."

"Robert (Hunter) and his wife Maureen had been very helpful to Marleen during the period of Rodney's illness. Robert had met Rodney down the Peninsula in 1962 and had stayed in touch over the years, finally working together in "San Francisco's Greatest Bluegrass Band" in 1973 at the Potatoe (sic) Festival in Malin, Oregon. Later Robert did guest slots with Rodhog (sic), a band with Ted Claire and Jeffery Dambreau, using the alias 'Lefty Banks'."

Did Hunter play the potato harvest festival twice with Rodney or is Peter mixing up '73 with '75? Is it just a "Relix" transcription error? Or does this push back Hunter first playing live with Rodney's group, hiding away at a spud fest of all things, to the same year he first recorded with two goes at Rum Runners, and it went so well they came back two years later? Note Peter says this was before 'Lefty Banks' played with Roadhog. Why were they there anyway, because Kesey or the Pendleton boys had a potato connection? Cowboys and dirt farmers don't get on in all the movies I've seen.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-47737659037547298062016-06-13T17:36:01.642-07:002016-06-13T17:36:01.642-07:00Barry will be here next month so I will ask him.Barry will be here next month so I will ask him.The Yellow Sharkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17001772238662274893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-6571069945626328772016-06-12T16:43:23.296-07:002016-06-12T16:43:23.296-07:00Thanks for the kind words and the detailed updates...Thanks for the kind words and the detailed updates.

I was aware of the May 22 '74 "Liberty Hill Aristocrats" booking at Glide Memorial. My current thinking was that it was an acoustic version of Roadhog (perhaps without a rhythm section), perhaps with Hunter as well. Calling themselves by the name of a long-gone ensemble, particularly one that included "Lefty Banks" would have been very funny to the Aristocrats, Joe and Barry.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-1330192947791627292016-06-12T10:39:47.433-07:002016-06-12T10:39:47.433-07:00Great job Corry. This comprised, RA, Robin Mighell, Foster Cope, Amanda Morgan and San Mateo HS student Henry Kaiser. (b) There was a show on May 22, 1974 at the Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco where the "Liberty Hill Aristocrats" played with "Country Joe and The Fish" show (Joe and Barry. This was a benefit for San Francisco Women's Centers which was formed in 1971. I don't know the line up. (c) I have Garcia listed as a member of the Liberty Hill Aristocrats on November 10, 1962 with Robert Hunter, Peter and Rodney. (d) Once the LHA faded in 1965 Peter would form Peter and the Wolves with John Jennings and a couple of others. John would go on to be a founding member of the Wildflower which included Stephen Ehret - a friend of Rodney Albin and a cohort in organising the College of San Mateo Folk festival in January 1964 where Ale Eckstrom (recently passed), Jesse Fuller, Pat Kliroy, Black Mountain String Band (with Garcia and Nelson) Ellen Faust, the Liberty Hill Aristocrats and The Southgate Singers with Stephen Ehret would perform. (e) When Paul Beck (Ferrez) dropped out of the scene with Blue Yard Hill and Big Brother and The Holding Company were formed, Rodney was initially a member of the band and may well of played at the November 1965 show in Panhandle Park where Big Brother and The Holding Company and the Vipers (in their pre Blue House Basement days) performed. (f) Rodney Albin had an interest in magic tricks and pranks (included for completeness). (g) Don't be surprised if a new Sopwith Camel album pops up fairly soon. I knew ...A really lovely and well researched post. I knew Rodney, a friend, you might say and such a lovely man. He was a co-owner of that music store, which you called Haight Street Music (it is NOW Haight Ashbury Music Center), but it was actually called Acoustic Music, as it says on the card that you have, which was nice to see again. The store, as I wrote, still exists - the one musical instrument shop in the Haight, so that is another nice piece of his legacy. Also, from what I recall, which contradicts the Hunter quote, both Rodney and Hunter joined Comfort at the same time. It was 3 Haight bands that joined forces - Comfort (Kevin Morgenstern, Marlene Molle and Pat Lorenzano), Roadhog (Rodney Albin, Robert Hunter) and Jumpin Jupiter (Richard "Sunshine" McNees and Larry and Kathleen Klein). That union also ended up bringing Marlene and Rodney together. Hunter decided eventually to go a bit more lean and have a duet instead with Larry Klein as his bass player. It was a shame that Alligator Moon never came out. It seems it was very close to being released, since I recall a full page ad for it in BAM magazine at one point.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-56866142409712511322016-05-14T17:06:43.374-07:002016-05-14T17:06:43.374-07:00Man, this is wonderful.
