But, to a great extent, the official NRPS history has just tended to import a lot of stuff from GD histories, a lot of which is based on assumptions, guesses, etc.Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-85060611452767362882011-11-25T19:41:40.887-08:002011-11-25T19:41:40.887-08:00One of the things I have figured out is that NRPS ...One of the things I have figured out is that NRPS history is fairly underdocumented. There aren't that many tapes, and there aren't that many eyewitness accounts of NRPS shows from that period (true of most groups except the Dead and a few other major groups). I agree with your proposition that Keith and/or the Riders seem to have gotten the idea for him to sit in from the number of shows they opened. However, if Keith sat in on 3/18, perhaps he sat in at least a few times after that when the Riders opened.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-50174371480934063792011-11-25T18:32:44.066-08:002011-11-25T18:32:44.066-08:00The NRPS site shows them opening for the Dead on 2...The NRPS site shows them opening for the Dead on 2/19, 2/21, 2/22, 2/28, 3/19, 3/30, 3/31, and 4/2. I think most of those are confirmed, but at any rate, it was a bunch of shows!
Interestingly, their setlists page doesn't list Keith playing on any of those (or for that matter, even the 3/18 Felt Forum show), so I'd call that an unknown unless someone's heard tapes.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-20173845206726434982011-11-25T16:34:30.073-08:002011-11-25T16:34:30.073-08:00I know of the following for sure, from published r...I know of the following for sure, from published reviews, etc.

UIUC 2/21/73, presumably also 2/22/73
SLC 2/28/73
3/19/73 Nassau
4/2/73 BostonFate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-34375720982314882512011-11-25T12:20:20.271-08:002011-11-25T12:20:20.271-08:00LIA, do you know which shows NRPS opened for the D...LIA, do you know which shows NRPS opened for the Dead in Winter '73? The idea must have come up when the Riders were opening several shows for the Dead in winter 1973.
Though it must have been planned, it seems to have been short-lived - perhaps because Commander Cody was able to join the New Riders on piano sometimes from mid-1973.
It's also possible that Keith & the Riders didn't feel that they were working out together, perhaps for non-musical reasons. (Just musically speaking, it was probably a breeze for Keith. But he and Donna did become known as terrors on tour, though that was a few years later...)Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-32697714713934938602011-11-25T10:49:07.500-08:002011-11-25T10:49:07.500-08:00It only took about 30 years for me to notice this....It only took about 30 years for me to notice this. After Garcia left the Riders, the band were still linked by management and booking agency through about the end of '73. I think there's a lot of analysis yet to be done on the business and musical relationships between the bands during that period.

Once the Riders change management and Dave Torbert leaves, they become considerably less interesting, and also much more remote from the Dead.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-75404302886440592202011-11-25T09:32:03.840-08:002011-11-25T09:32:03.840-08:00What a fascinating little nugget you have presente...What a fascinating little nugget you have presented to us. I was only aware of the Felt Forum thing, but you point to some tantalizing possibilities.
