I would have written them that night. I am more inclined to believe 1980-me than 30-years-later-me, so I think I just mentally inserted Carmine Appice. Memory is weird.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-53111608692865872892018-08-13T05:52:50.036-07:002018-08-13T05:52:50.036-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Bloggerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07287821785570247118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-35861581401548654422017-11-02T08:23:44.185-07:002017-11-02T08:23:44.185-07:00Up here in the CT suburbs "Too Many Losers&qu...Up here in the CT suburbs "Too Many Losers" is HUGE in the GD firmament. While we were very aware of Mr. Weir's commercial aspirations at the time, we could appreciate the jazz-funk-rock fusion sensibility. Plus, they put on a kickass high-energy show that even made Bobby's occasional croaking screeches seem right at home!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-91894982365386266652017-09-28T19:20:07.627-07:002017-09-28T19:20:07.627-07:00Thanks for your extended comment.
I too feel that...Thanks for your extended comment.

I too feel that Bobby And The Midnites were hugely underrated. There is this strange dynamic from a certain kind of Garcia fan who need to put down Weir. Weir was pretty consciously doing a contemporary rock thing, and was very explicit about it, and yet no one would take him at his word.

I found Cobham to be really impressive live. On "Big Iron," for example, he was like Billy-plus-Mickey and yet with a relaxed feel. Who knew Cobham could play honky tonk music? Another thing the Midnites get no credit for, seeing guys like Cobham and Alfonso play "non-fusion" music.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-74406125519727133192017-09-28T19:13:24.371-07:002017-09-28T19:13:24.371-07:00I saw the two versions of Bobby and the Midnights,...I saw the two versions of Bobby and the Midnights, in Santa Cruz at the Catalyst, and a couple of years later at the Orpheum in Boston. I, too, am a little befuddled at how easily this band slipped into obscurity. When I saw them the first time, Weir had the reputation, which to a certain extent he carries with him today, as the goof and maybe a lightweight compared to Jerry and Phil. I wasn't sure at all what to expect from the band. I was more than pleasantly surprised. I still remember the Poison Ivy opener, for both how well it was done and how from out of left field a musical choice it was.

I was really excited to the second version of B&TM. I had gotten into jazz/rock n the 70s and billy cobham was a hero. As much of a draw, at the time, as seeing Weir. He's a totally amazing drummer and worth the price of admission on his own. I remember the show as being a little more jammy that the Catalyst show a nd thinking at the time, so that's where that particular sound comes from. while the Catalyst show was an enjoyable surprise, the Orpheum show blew me away. I was just hanging out in the not quite sold out theater in the top rows with friends dancing and soaking it all in. I had no idea that that would be that.

Also, my recollection was that Kenny Gradney was the bass player (I was also a Little Feat fan so this added to the All Star lineup appeal.) I don't know if it is possible to verify or if it matters.

Also also, I was well aware at the time of Bogert and Appice (though not as big a fan of Cobham and Gradney) so it was interesting to see how they would mesh. I was not expecting the kind of straight ahead rock that I heard, given their pedigree.

I'm surprised at the lack of musical legacy this band left, considering who was in it. I've never heard any live recording of the band.Mark@eligus.comhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12899496787697393761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-2601706943907897972011-10-29T06:23:36.735-07:002011-10-29T06:23:36.735-07:00thanks.
