Weasel, a DJ at the station, gave this quote. "Jerry Garcia often went to the Red Fox to play after visiting with him in the WHFS studio."

The Red Fox Inn was a huge in the local bluegrass circles. The Seldom Scene would be the house band every thursday night for much of the 70's.
I also found the station ID Jerry recorded for the station before the november 1978 capital center show. One of the station engineers commented on the video with more details of the ID recording session.
"...interviewed Jerry on air, that evening Diane Divola, Bob, Don, Adele, David, Damian & Patti, Weasel, Mark Avery & Jeff Schwartz all were in the building as 50 Deadheads congregated outside Triangle Towers in Bethesda until MC's finest disbursed them. We had scored for Jerry & Rock Scully. (They did it all right there..shocked don't be?) Garcia couldn't leave so he hung out during my shift. I had brought in "Introducing the Beatles" on Vee Jay and “Casino” by Al Dimeola. Jerry was diggin' both lps. He approved of our open playlist and gave me a decal with their brand new logo then said "I don't know why all the fuss out there...I’m just a picker". Capt Tripps R.I.P."
I would love to know if Jerry really played with a bluegrass band in a small suburban Maryland restaurant.

Weasel quote
http://www.bethesdamagazine.com/Bethesda-Magazine/July-August-2016/When-Bethesda-Was-Cool/index.php?cparticle=2&siarticle=1
WHFS Station ID
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xrmz20cJWw
Cerphe (of 'waiting for columbus' intro fame) story about Jerry whfs interview
https://dinerhunter.com/tag/grateful-dead/David Kramer-Smythhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17068958765621590452noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-38034205917412810222018-03-24T12:31:43.740-07:002018-03-24T12:31:43.740-07:00> p.s. it is a limited edition. if you are goin...> p.s. it is a limited edition. if you are going to get it, get it soon.

oops - it is not a 'limited edition'. it is a fantastic album!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-82264711881984891032018-03-22T15:28:16.280-07:002018-03-22T15:28:16.280-07:00ned lagin has released a new, remastered, 2 CD ...ned lagin has released a new, remastered, 2 CD 'seastones'. it is available through the store at his web site. you can read the album notes here http://spiritcats.com/seastones.html

p.s. it is a limited edition. if you are going to get it, get it soon.

p.p.s. it is great!

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-22916247807672438302017-09-16T16:05:59.682-07:002017-09-16T16:05:59.682-07:00Some helpful links

Corry and I have discussed this a bit at http://jgmf.blogspot.com/2014/09/jerry-garcia-and-merl-saunders-at.html.Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-1281462458926483202017-06-22T12:16:49.221-07:002017-06-22T12:16:49.221-07:00If nothing else, at least "Jerry + mime"...If nothing else, at least "Jerry + mime" beats the chimp act that opened for the Dead.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11628132999021385676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-63426089289643500792017-06-22T12:15:22.217-07:002017-06-22T12:15:22.217-07:00Right, it's not clear from Marsh's comment...Right, it's not clear from Marsh's comments if they were both booked to play the same night, or how exactly it was "set up" that the four would play together -- for all we know, it could have been a Jerry Hahn booking that somehow went south? On the other hand, that "5/20/71" G/S tape is so much looser, spacier, and jammier in every way than the 9/24/71 tape that I wonder if maybe the 5/20/71 gig was Garcia, Saunders, and some other musicians who were all just jamming, much as G/S/Grave/Marsh would have done.

I have Hahn's Moses lp, btw, and haven't listened to it in years, but I remember it being pretty earth bound. Not bad by any means, but nothing that would indicate that a trip to Mars was in their trajectory.Nickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11628132999021385676noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-41427790573432564662017-06-22T12:07:57.337-07:002017-06-22T12:07:57.337-07:00Thank you (I think). I ...I think the Marsh and Graves gig was late 1970. I have no way of proving it of course. If Kahn had been on tour with Brewer and Shipley, Merl would have got them as subs. By '71, JGMS was playing songs as opposed to just free jamming, but I think the 70s shows were pretty spacey.

Saunders played on a Jerry Hahn Brotherhood album recorded at Fantasy in January 73. We were set up in there looking at the wall which was only 8 or 10 feet away. There were people coming in off the street, they didn't know who it was. They thought it was a coffee shop. We'd come on and we'd kill them... We were just scalping them; we were giving them a lobotomy, and they couldn't believe it. They couldn't get up, and they thought they'd die."Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-64810255409244628272017-05-12T18:25:31.082-07:002017-05-12T18:25:31.082-07:00Man, great find as always. He must've jammed with almost every musician he came in contact with...I'm sure JGMF is all over that!

For now, I'll mention that when the Dead were staying at the Chateau d'Herouville in June '71, there was a regular flow of people going in and out of the studio. One journalist mentioned Phil jamming with "two members of Light Sound Dimension (a West Coast band) and a French session man."
Light Sound Dimension played after the Dead at the June 21 garden show - they included drummer Jerry Granelli & guitarist Fred Marshall, and their music was described as "abstract, strident, excessively electronic, a passage of piercing shrieks." Right up Phil's alley!

Anyway, the Dead also did some rehearsing in the studio, and Jerry jammed with some other folks too. One journalist wrote, "Garcia slips off, sets up his small Fender amp in a corner and blows. When British stage manager Lenny Smith joins him on Spanish guitar, Garcia just looks up and smiles. Together they take off moving somewhere, together."

Less inspirational was Garcia's jam session with the British jazz-rock group Bubastis, as described by another reporter:
"The English wanted at all costs to do a jam session with the Dead, just now, up there in the studio... They rushed to their equipment and set it up, got it running, got themselves together. They were finally ready, yet the Dead’s equipment still had not left the truck... [Guitarist Geoff] Nicholson barely left Garcia time to get ready or adjust his tiny Fender Special Studio amp. Cascades of clarion notes came out of his huge Marshall submerging everything, except the “free-jazz” saxophonist of Bubastis, very eager to be heard at all costs. He succeeded, alas. Bob Weir managed somehow to put a few chords here and there; Garcia tried several times to play. Alas! As soon as his solo sprang out, as soon as he emerged from this rickety rhythm...[Nicholson] came in with his racket, and Garcia stopped, thinking that his amp had suddenly failed. This little game lasted an hour, an hour that the road managers took advantage of to set up little by little almost all of the Dead’s equipment. Garcia put down his guitar, doubtlessly defeated by the noise: our eyes met at that time and his expression left no doubt about the reasons for this abandonment. And do not tell me that a good musician should be able to play with anyone!"Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5268955857828486331.post-52949456413005378772017-05-12T17:59:05.220-07:002017-05-12T17:59:05.220-07:00Thanks for the kind words.
